Meilink 'in the desert'
This year's edition of the classic Abu Dhabi's Desert Challenge starts on 25 February. To ensure that the motorcyclists can start, Impeco ordered crates from Meilink for transporting the motorbikes. We supplied the packaging, after which the drivers loaded the motorbikes into the crates for transport to the United Arab Emirates.
Prestigious project by Impeco for the W2RC
Impeco handles all logistics involved in international sporting and other events, including the transport of motorbikes to this series of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC). Dakar may be the best known of these events, but the one in the Abu Dhabi desert is one of the oldest and most prominent rallies in the world. This was a prestigious project for which Impeco had to be able to rely on the quality and timely delivery of the necessary packaging: the crates for the motorbikes.
Lower deck in the aircraft
Walter Markink, account manager at Meilink: "We have previously made crates for Impeco to transport motorbikes in. This time they needed to be slightly smaller, because they were transported on the lower deck of the aircraft. We used Finnish pine as the material, instead of the Birch plywood we previously used. That type of plywood has become much more expensive, so this is a better solution. Naturally, the wood used conforms to ISPM15. We made the crates fully dismountable with the use of 'simple' carriage bolts and nuts." This robust and simple solution means the crates can also be used for transport back to the Netherlands.
Outward and return packaging
The eight crates were made at Meilink Borculo and fitted with logos and the mandatory symbols. They were then delivered to Impeco in Duiven on 6 February, where a large number of the drivers later gathered to pack their motorbikes themselves. The rally in the desert near Abu Dhabi is from 25 February to 2 March. Afterwards. the motorbikes will be taken back to the Netherlands in the same crates, but this time on a container ship.
